Blocking and Unblocking Websites

Web filtering provides an essential safeguarding provision for schools. It is strongly advised that

  • When blocking a site, the description field is used to record the name of the person that requested the block
  • When unblocking sites that this is internally agreed with your key safeguarding personnel in accordance with your acceptable use policy.

The Smoothwall Platform

When fully-implemented, Smoothwall

  • supports existing Safeguarding policies but, through the provision of ‘Delegated Admin’, allows you to modify aspects of your own web-filtering.  It does not change your existing Safeguarding responsibilities.
  • will let you modify your existing web-filtering policies and will give you greater control over what content is made available over your network to pupils, staff and guests.  You will also be able to control when content is available and where it can be seen.
  • monitors new and existing web content through detailed analysis of individual web pages and its flexible tools allow you to remove inappropriate content across social media sites.  You will be able to use Smoothwall to monitor the activity of individuals and groups of users.
  • produces reports which identifies searches made in seven areas of safeguarding concern including radicalisation, suicide and self-harm.
